Bernards Township is a township in Somerset County, New Jersey. Its population is approximately 26,670 and its total area is 24.06 square miles. The Township was originally formed by Royal charter in 1760 from remaining portions of Northern precinct; it was only in 1798 that it was officially incorporated as Bernards Township. Bernards Township was named for Sir Francis Bernard, 1st Baronet, who served as governor of the Province of New Jersey, and was originally called Bernardston Township. Unincorporated communities, localities and locations that are partially or completely located within Bernards Township include Basking Ridge, Green Knoll, Hardscrabble, Liberty Corner, Lyons, Madisonville, Mount Horeb, Somerset Mills, State Park, Stone House and White Bridge.
